FAQs
How do fire rated downlights work?
When downlights are installed, holes are placed within ceilings, which can compromise fire resistance. However, fire rated downlights are designed to restore fire resistance and increase the amount of time it takes for a fire to spread by featuring an intumescent material usually found within the housing or surrounding lamp holder. This material expands when exposed to high temperatures, effectively sealing off the opening and creating a barrier against fire and smoke by restoring the fire integrity of the ceiling.
Fire rated downlights help to minimise the devastating effects fire can have and allow additional time for safe evacuation of the premises.
What type of fire rated downlights do you supply?
Choose from a range of styles and features to suit your needs. We supply:
- Matt white, satin chrome and satin nickel
- Dimmable fire rated downlights with colour selectors
- Recessed light fittings and mounts
- Multiple sizes
What is the difference between integrated and non-integrated downlights?
Most integrated downlights come with a fixed light source (usually an LED module) which forms part of a single unit. These integrated LED downlights often have a long lifespan since the light source is not replaceable. However, non-integrated downlights require a separate light source that can be replaced independently. This offers more options for customisation although the overall design is less sleek compared to most integrated LED downlights.
What is the difference between fixed downlights and adjustable downlights?
Adjustable fire-rated downlights allow for adjustment of the light beam angle and provide versatility when lighting specific areas of objects. Fixed downlights are set in place and provide a consistent beam of light that is directed downwards.
What is the difference between standard downlights and fire rated downlights?
Fire rated downlights are equipped with additional fire safety features compared to standard downlights. They are designed using fire-resistant materials and intumescent seals to prevent the passage of fire and smoke. Replacing existing downlights with fire-rated options ensures compliance with building regulations and provides additional fire protection.
What does GU10 stand for?
GU10 is a type of light bulb socket or base. The 'GU' indicates that the bulb has a bi-pin base, where the pins are spaced 10mm apart. The '10' refers to this 10mm distance between the pins. GU10 bulbs have a twist-and-lock mechanism and are widely used in track lighting, recessed downlights and other lighting fixtures.
