FAQs
What are downlights?
Downlights are a modern style of light fitting which are usually installed in ceilings and shine their light in a downward direction. They feature an LED placed in a metal cylinder within the ceiling, which is then covered with a fascia which is held into place by springs or compression clips.
How energy-efficient are LED downlights?
Any downlight that uses LED lighting technology is designed to be highly energy-efficient and cost-effective. LED downlights use up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and can last up to 50 times longer, so you won’t have to worry about replacing them as often.
What types of downlights are available?
LED
LED downlights are the most common type of downlight commonly used in homes and offices. LED technology provides brighter downlights compared to traditional bulbs, offering an instant and flicker-free light source that's ideal for general lighting. LEDs have a long lifespan and require minimal maintenance.
Smart
Downlights equipped with smart features can be integrated into smart home systems and controlled via an app or remote control. They offer extra features such as dimming and colour changing.
Fixed vs adjustable
Fixed downlights emit light in a fixed direction to provide direct light on a specific area. Adjustable downlights have moveable fixtures to adjust the direction of the light beam, making them perfect for lighting up specific areas of a room.
Integrated vs non-integrated
Integrated LED downlights are when the LED light is built into the fixture as one unit. Non-integrated LED downlights (also known as retrofit) mean the two components are separate, and the LED light can be fitted separately.
Fire-rated and non fire-rated
Fire-rated downlights ensure safety in case of a fire and help properties and businesses to comply with building and safety regulations. They contain an intumescent material that expands under heat to block fire and smoke.
Where can I install downlights?
Downlights can be installed in ceilings or used as wall lights, and are available in different sizes and styles to suit your space. Downlights provide even light throughout the room without creating harsh shadows or glare, making them ideal for living areas.
What brands of downlights do you supply?
We stock premium downlights from trusted brands that are well-trusted in the lighting industry. Choose from the lights of Luxna, Aurora, JCC, Saxby and Eterna.
What IP rating do I need?
An IP rating consists of two numbers, with the first digit representing protection against solid objects such as dust, while the second digit representing protection against liquids. For example, an IP rating of IP65 means full protection from dust (6) and protection against jets of water.
Bathroom downlights require a rating of IP44 or higher, depending on their location or 'zone'. For general use, no special IP is needed, but IP20 is the minimum for standard protection against dust and solid objects.
How many downlights do I need?
The number of downlights required for your project will depend on the size of the space and the type of atmosphere you want to create. However, as a rule of thumb, it is often recommended to install one downlight per square metre. It is also advised that you leave approximately one metre of space between each downlight and allow a distance of half a metre from your walls. Factors such as ceiling height and furniture placement will need to be taken into account to avoid over-illumination or shadows.
How do I prolong the lifespan of my downlights?
Cleaning your downlights regularly with a soft, dry cloth to remove any dust will help to maintain optimal light output and prevent build-up that could cause damage to the lighting fixtures.
What colour temperature should I choose?
We offer a wide range of styles and colour temperatures to choose from. Warm white (2700K-3000K) creates a cosy and relaxing atmosphere, cool white (4000K) offers a brighter, more neutral light, suited for kitchens, bathrooms, and workspaces and daylight (5000K-6500K) mimics natural sunlight, perfect perfect for spaces where strong, clear lighting is required.
