Scenic Drives Across Yorkshire
Published: Thursday, 09 February 2023
When the weather is bad and you feel like getting out of the house, which are the most scenic routes in Yorkshire with EV charging points en route?
While 80% of Yorkshire is considered 'urban', there are plenty of quiet country lanes, quaint villages and hidden beauty spots to explore. From 45 mile long coastlines, to the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors, God’s own country attracts around 20.3 million visitors per year.
Thanks to wide expanses of open countryside, Yorkshire is best explored via car, giving you the freedom to find your own hidden beauty spots. However, even some of the most remote, beautiful areas have EV chargers in easy reach, so you can discover the local area without the fear of running out of charge.
Our team here at YESSS Electrical has put together hotspots with the perfect combination of beauty, sustainability and practicality in mind. All the locations listed have electric vehicle charging points nearby, so you can travel safely and easily, no matter how far into the Yorkshire wilderness you roam.
Discover some of Yorkshire’s most scenic drives below.
We’re starting strong with the picturesque route to Haworth
This charming village was first home to the famous Brontë sisters, making it a perfect spot for literature lovers and history fans alike.
With a legacy that still lingers, tourists can take a picturesque hike up to Top Withens which served as inspiration for Wuthering Heights. To take in more of the beautifully bleak landscapes that inspired Cathy and Heathcliff’s characters, stop to take a quick picnic break at the ethereal Bronte Waterfall.
If you are hungry for more history, this picturesque town also allows you to dive into the lives of the Bronte sisters in the Bronte Parsonage museum. Not only will you enjoy this experience, but so will your EV, as there are EV chargers onsite - located in the Bronte Parsonage museum car park. There is also ‘The Kings Arms’ pub nearby if you’re feeling a bit peckish.
If history isn’t your thing, this village is also home to a quaint high street where a number of independent shops, pubs and restaurants are planted, allowing you to shop or eat until you drop.
Second, but definitely not second best is the journey to Ilkley
With a similar quaint feel to Haworth, Ilkley is a small, homely town that will take you away from the hustle and bustle of Leeds.
This pretty, traditional spa town is home to some of the best rated tea rooms in Yorkshire, including Betty’s, which is conveniently placed beside Ilkleys main car park. Within this car park contains EV chargers.
Worry not thrill-seekers, it does have an adventurous side, with miles of wild countryside ready to be explored by walkers and rock climbers.
If you prefer to enjoy these unmissable views from the safety of your car, we recommend the Yorkshire Moors drive from Baildon to Ilkley - here you will drive on rural country roads looking over patches of green land, which stretch for miles. Dotted with sheep, horses and cows, this route is a nature lover's dream.
If you’re looking for a pit stop before the journey home, there are plenty of pubs and shops in Ilkley to suit you. After a tough day of shopping or climbing, you could try the famous Cow and Calf Rocks, which proudly sits above the town on the Yorkshire Moors. Here you will be able to eat like a king as you drool over a wide range of pub classics such as a freshly cooked roast.
Once you’ve had your fill of exploring, charge your EV in the Tesco Superstore car park handily located within the centre of Ilkley - and grab some weekly essentials whilst your EV charges for the journey home.
Third in line is Brimham Rocks
Not far from Pateley Bridge, this unique find is a climber's haven. Created over 100 million years before dinosaurs explored the earth, this sculpture-like scene of rock formations is a great day out for the whole family. What’s more is that in September to early November, this land is splattered with a rare variety of ling, bell and cross-leaved heather.
From Brimham Rocks, a short drive alongside countryside lanes will take you to Fountains Abbey, one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England. In Car Park Six, you will find EV chargers which can be used while you explore.
Furthermore, if you would like to continue exploring the next day, why not make this trip into a mini staycation? The grand Ripley Castle is a mere few stops away from Warner Hotels’: Nidd Hall, allowing you to rest whilst your EV charges in the hotel's carpark.
Grassington: A Yorkshire Dales gem
Traditionally a market town, Grassington is buried in beautiful scenery: Think traditional limestone buildings, the River Wharfe and a cobbled market square that features in Channel 5’s newest take on All Creatures Great and Small.
Not to be forgotten is the town's wide array of cosy little shops, pubs and cafes - perfect for browsing while you stretch your legs. .
If you can’t get enough of the heritage paving this charming town, there is something for the whole family to explore at the Grassington Folk Museum.
You also won’t have to worry about EV charging while you’re there, as there is one charging point within the town centre, near the Yorkshire Dales National Park Visitor Centre, allowing you to recharge with nature and your car to recharge for the journey home.
Saving one of the best places till last: Malham
Magic is in the air at Malham. Home to the famous cove that appeared in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, this location is popular with fans all over the UK.
Small but mighty, this town gifts visitors with unbeatable scenic walks alongside traditional pubs and tearooms. You could try The Old Barn Tearoom to quench your thirst while your electric car charges, with a Pod Point charging station directly across the road in Malham car park. If you’re looking for a longer stop, you could stroll down the high street to visit Malham Cove itself, which is around a three hour walk in total.
